Where did the idea for My First Barbecue Book come from?

When my partner’s son was small and we were doing animal noises with him I found it funny to say “sizzle” for cows, pigs, and lambs because they are my favourite meats. I’m also a big fan of barbecue and it occurred to me that it would make a fun book for all ages.

Is this ACTUALLY a children’s book?

Kinda, sorta, maybe? It’s in a children’s style, but may be a little darker than you’d like your kids to experience just yet. That said, I believe it’s important that kids learn where our tastiest food comes from, and this book will accomplish that without being graphic.

Will my children be scarred for life if I read it with them?

I would hope not. It does indicate that animals are food, and that the food we barbecue comes from those animals, so if you’re worried about your children learning that right now then you probably should wait.

How difficult is it to read? What age would you say could read it?

I aimed it at 4-6 year olds, but feel free to buy a copy for whatever age family members you like. I’m sure it would be enjoyed by folks from 1-100* years old.

*People over 100 years of age will not be prosecuted, or prevented from reading it.

So, like, our family is totally vegan… is this delightful farmyard book suitable for us?

Erm… no, probably not. This is a book about meat and you probably wouldn’t like it.

Hey, why didn’t you include (insert creature) in your book? That’s unfair!

Life is occasionally unfair. In this instance I picked as many animals as I could think of that people eat regularly.

No need to send money or underwear. I’ll sign copies if you really want.

Are you planning any other children’s books?

Maybe. If inspiration strikes then another kids’ BBQ related book could be forthcoming. Time will tell.
